ACBL Bridge Beat #27: Helen Pendleton Rockwell

Best known as the donor of the Rockwell Trophy for the Mixed Pairs, Helen Pendleton Rockwell (1885-1964) was the daughter of Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton of the U.S. Marine Corps for whom Camp Pendleton was named. Rockwell had two main loves – bridge and food.

As the president of the Women’s National Committee of the ACBL, she toured the country many times and was known for her ability to track down the outstanding and unusual places to eat. Throughout her travels at home and abroad, she collected recipes from famous chefs, food experts and women’s clubs. Eventually she penned two cookbooks – The Amateur Epicure’s Cookbook and Here’s How: A Journey Through Good Food.

Here’s How contains an introduction by William McKenney and features a running commentary on how and where she obtained her most interesting recipes.

Rockwell won the Women’s Teams (now the Wagar Women’s Knockout Teams) in 1934 with Marguerite McKenney, Gail Hamilton and Anne Rosenfeld.
